AIR in Glasgow

A lot is happening in Glasgow, Scotland, the host city of the Commonwealth Games-2014. Besides broadcasting live commentaries, periodic FM updates and daily highlights covering the sports action, All India Radio has also been interacting with people in and around Glasgow and highlighting various facets of life in Scotland to listeners back home through the programme “Post Card from Glasgow”. After all, Commonwealth Games are also known as the ‘friendly Games’.

On 30.07.2014, AIR was the fastest in the arena, transmitting breaking news instantly every time India won a medal in Wrestling. Listeners were kept constantly updated with the latest from the Badminton courts where our players moved to the pre-Quarters and the Boxing ring where five of our boxers have assured the country a medal each. Performance of Indians in Athletics, Artistic Gymnastics, Squash and Table Tennis was also highlighted. AIR also broadcast live commentary of the Women’s Hockey match between India and South Africa.

The Daily Highlights at 7.05 am had a bouquet of sound bites of prominent Indian performers including Gold medallist wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sushil Kumar, Amit Kumar and silver medallist  Rajiv Tomar, as also those of silver medallist shooters Harpreet Singh and Sanjiv Rajput and bronze medallists Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Gagan Narang and Lajja Goswami.  Chandrakant Dadu Mali (Silver medallist in Weightlifting), India’s Men’s Hockey captain Sardar Singh and Coach Terry Walsh, and almost all Indian boxers who moved into the next round also featured in this highlights capsule.

Programme “Post Card from Glasgow” which was broadcast late night on 30.07.2014 contained short chat and sound bites featuring people of Indian and Asian origin presently in Glasgow and technical aspects of broadcasting from Glasgow.
AIR has created an e-mail account airatglasgow@gmail.com for receiving feedback from listeners on its Commonwealth Games broadcasts. Contents of some e-mail messages received so far are reproduced here:-

I want to wish thanks to you all for that. I am a student and apart from studies, i follow the live matches commentary and morning show but am unable to listen the postcard which is the most entertaining ... as it is broadcast at 11:30pm.
